What Can We Help You Find

Nebraska’s Cheapest Companies

Did you know that Nebraska was the first state in the country to complete its segment of the interstate system, with more than 400 miles of highway running from border to border? This should come as no surprise, especially if a long road trip is part of your daily routine.

Based on our analysis of eight regions, 10 companies and four driver profiles (male, female, over 65, teenager), we’ve compiled these average yearly rates for typical Nebraskan drivers. Military-affiliated drivers are in luck, as USAA is the cheapest provider in the state for auto insurance. However, USAA only serves members of the military and their direct family members. Geico comes in a close second, offering closely competitive rates for the non-military general public. Progressive and Allstate come in third and fourth, with rates that are around 17 percent cheaper than the next lowest provider on the list.

Average Annual Rate
USAA$1,607.33
Geico$1,634.13
Progressive$1,820.24
Allstate$1,874.25
Farmers$2,168.45
Nationwide$2,221.23
American Family$2,234.22
State Farm$2,409.01
Iowa Farm Bureau$2,534.00

How Much Drivers Like You Spend On Auto Insurance

No two drivers are the same, so insurance rates will vary from person to person. We’ve used data compiled from the Nebraska Department of Insurance to put together ballpark figures for different kinds of drivers. Find the driver profile that describes you best, and take a look at our findings below.

Cheapest for Teen Drivers
We looked at the profiles of 17-year-old drivers with clean records and who typically drive around 12,000 miles a year. Overall, the cheapest providers are Geico, Allstate, USAA, and Farmers, with Geico coming in first and Allstate very close behind.

Average Annual Rate
Geico$2,449.47
Allstate$2,495.75
USAA$2,634.88
Farmers$2,927.13
American Family$3,424.96
Nationwide$3,481.20
State Farm$3,815.82

Rate Differences between Male and Female Teenage Drivers
Teenage males can generally expect to pay more for auto insurance, with an average 16 percent rate increase in Nebraska. Geico and Allstate are still the most affordable regardless of sex, with USAA and Farmers close behind.

Cheapest for College Students
We studied the driving profiles of 21-year-olds with clean driving records who average 12,000 miles yearly. Most college students who live away from home fall into this category. If that’s you, then here’s the good news: Your rates stand to fall almost 39 percent from your typical 17-year-old insurance rate. Progressive offers the largest decrease in rates for college-aged drivers, down more than 50 percent from its pricey plans for teenagers. If you’re in it for the long-haul, then Progressive is the clear winner.

Cheapest for Drivers Over 65
14.4 percent of the population of Nebraska is older than age 65. We looked at married homeowners over 65 who have clean driving records. If you fall into that category, then you’ve got plenty of great options to choose from. USAA, Progressive, Geico, and Nationwide all offer annual coverage for less than $900, or around $75 a month.

Each insurance company tends to cater to its own target demographics, and for drivers over 65, it’s no different. Progressive is the cheapest for married drivers over 65 but is the most expensive for young drivers. Its discounts, tools, and more are geared toward a more mature, safer driving demographic.

Average Annual Rate
USAA$807.75
Progressive$861.38
Geico$864.25
Nationwide$875.56
American Family$1,176.38
Farmers$1,199.13
State Farm$1,269.63
Shelter Insurance$1,309.25
Allstate$1,343.50
Iowa Farm Bureau$1,571.50

City Rates

Unlike most states, Nebraska’s Department of Insurance calculates rates based on eight different regions rather than city by city. Lincoln is the biggest city and has the cheapest insurance. Omaha is broken into four different regions, with prices differing by hundreds of dollars. For instance, southwestern Omaha is subject to a 16 percent lower average rate than northeastern Omaha, whose higher median income could contribute to more expensive insurance rates.

Average Annual Rate

SW Omaha$1,986.42
NW Omaha$2,067.97
South Sioux City$2,153.92

An insurance company’s market share is the percentage of Nebraska’s population that uses its service. In fact, going with the most popular insurance provider can be a good choice, because there’s a reason they’re the most popular in the state. Customer Satisfaction Ratings

By analyzing the number of complaints filed versus the number of policies written, we’ve compiled a “complaint index” so you can see which companies have the most satisfied customers at a glance. Generally, the lower the complaint ratio, the better. A zero is a great score, and a 1.0 or higher can be a red flag. In Nebraska, Geico holds a perfect zero rating, with Progressive and Nationwide coming in second and third, respectively.

Our Recommendation

Ultimately, we want you to make the best, most well-informed decision that meets your needs. We’re just here to crunch the numbers so that you don’t have to.

Taking a comprehensive look at every category, Progressive is consistently in the top five for price, customer service, and popularity. It offers excellent rates for married drivers over 65, and holds one of the biggest market shares in the state. If you’re a safe, established driver, you can’t go wrong with Progressive.

USAA ranks extremely well all around, but is only open to military members. Geico is cheapest for younger drivers and has a stellar customer satisfaction record, making it a good alternative to Progressive if you’re a younger driver.
